My approach to Couples Therapy

As a couples therapist, I hold space for both individuals while viewing your relationship as the client. I work to create a balanced, respectful environment where each partner feels heard, understood, and valued. By honouring your personal identities, cultural backgrounds, and the complexity of your shared experiences, I support you in exploring patterns with compassion and curiosity. Through guided clarity, deeper understanding, and intentional dialogue, I help you move toward empowered choices, meaningful change, and a stronger, more connected relationship. 

 

Additionally my aim is to give you a renewed sense of hope both for your relationship and your personal growth journey.

Common reasons couples seek therapy

Couples come to therapy for many different reasons. Often, challenges that feel overwhelming or stuck can become opportunities for deeper understanding and growth when explored together in a supportive space.

  • Communication difficulties; frequent misunderstandings, escalation or break down

 

  • Loss of sexual intimacy or emotional connection

 

  • Financial stress or disagreements about money

 

  • Parenting pressures and differing parenting styles

 

  • Relationships with extended family

 

  • Work or recreation differences and pressures

  

  •  Navigating life transitions or major changes

How do I work with both of you?

If you’ve never had couples therapy before it can feel a little daunting at first. My role is to work with you both equally, ensuring that there is balance and opportunity for you both to be heard and understood. I work to validate and normalise all parts of the relational experience, acknowledge and addressing truthfully any shame, hurt or wound.

I work from a position of open-mindedness and without judgment and offer you both the opportunity to work one to one in an individual session if helpful. However, my commitment and contract is with your relationship and not any one individual, with a view to contain and nurture a new more hopeful connection.

  • How did your relationship begin? What do you remember about the early days together?

 

  • What are you like in relationships - both now and in the past?

 

  • Have you seen any relational patterns, in yourself? How were you shown love and how did you witness love between your parents or caregivers?

 

  • What has your experience of endings or loss in relationships been like?

Looking forward

  • What would you like to do differently in this relationship? How are you going to better reflect and repair together?

 

  • What makes you feel emotionally safe in the relationship? What do you need more of from one another?

  • What are your hopes and dreams for this relationship? What do you want your relationship to look like in 5 years’ time? How will you know your relationship is healthy and how are you going to keep checking in with each other?

Sessions

My couples therapy sessions are available in person. To make therapy more accessible for couples with busy schedules, I will also be offering a bi-weekly Saturday morning in-person session.
